Why the special Touring configuration?

When we purchased these new, we wanted to continue riding farther and visiting more places. Sometimes popular locations but often waters that we may have never seen before and never ridden. Places that none of our friends had ever been to and sometimes had never heard of!

Our previous watercraft had served us well (with several hundred riding hours over ten years) but we knew our Yamaha GP1800 needed to be much better.

Improved ride comfort, more precise handling, longer cruise distances, better navigation.

And help us make it back home.
Capable of carrying plenty of extra fuel and refueling without struggle.
LED Navigation lights for safer riding at dusk, dawn and when caught in poor weather.
Top grade AGM batteries. Automatic electric bilge pump.

And lots of nice-to-have things.
Easy docking with better cleats and fenders.
Super stout Garmin mounting system reduces screen vibration and makes the GPS readable at speed.
And so on.

The ful list of upgrades, improvements and tweaks probably runs into the hundreds.

About Engine Hours

When we purchased these new we planned to run them for a thousand hours in the first ten years. The Yamaha 1.8 liter engines are legendary for reliability.

We have had zero problems with these engines beyond normal maintance and servicing. They start and run beautifully, every time. Cylinder compression checks are nominal and consistent across all eight.

Winterized every year, stored indoors.

We just do not have the time to ride much anymore since we are building a new business. Only seven hours in all of 2024 and not much again this year. Rather than getting close to the first thousand hours by next year, these engines have just 450 hours each.

If driven in a road car at 100 kph, 450 hours would be 45,000 Km distance. Nicely broken in but nowhere near end of life!

While we do enjoy an occasional blast across the water at full throttle the vast majority of the run time (95%) has been easy mid-range cruise speeds and below.

Why Two Watercraft?

Well, several reasons.
Neither of us likes being a PWC passenger and neither really likes having a passenger :/

Often we will be far from shore or visiting interesting places with very little boat traffic. We like going places which have very few other boats. Much less churn in the water from boat wakes, smoother riding. And when we stop, we can enjoy the natural quiet and subtle sounds of nature.

We made self-rescue an integral aspect of our riding. Beyond the extra gear and toolkit we might pack along, having two working watercraft on every tour means we always have a ride home even if one watercraft fails entirely and/or must be abandoned.

Two PWC also means we can each take a passenger and comfortably tour special places and share the experience. While these are full size PWC with a rating for three passengers, they are much better with one or two people aboard. Three people on board affects the handling qualities and impairs the ride comfort for everyone.

On group rides sometimes someone else's PWC fails (this happens more often than one might expect). The people climb onto one of our GP1800 as passengers. Our other GP1800 hooks up and does the towing. This is much safer and practical than trying to tow while also having passengers aboard. Especially if the trip back involves distance.

These watercraft have proven themselves to be reliable and seaworthy on rough water and in sudden storms, with stiff winds, across water and air temps ranging from 4C to 30C.

And of course wonderful rides on smooth glassy water.

They cope handily around crowded, choppy areas.

I do not have much video from rough water conditions as I was busy riding!
