Included with the sale is our custom kit for carrying extra gasoline on the rear deck.

The kit was designed to be light weight, easily installed and removed.

Can be configured to carry a single 20 litre fuel container on the rear deck.
OR two together.
OR even three for a total of 60 litres of extra fuel capacity.

Presuming your trip begins with the main fuel tank completely full, each 20 litres of extra fuel adds about 40% more to the cruise range. Two cans almost doubles the cruise range. Three cans on one ski is enough for both GP1800 to go 60% farther than with the main tanks alone.*

This not only extends your cruise range. It also reduces the worry of running low on fuel while working your way back at the end of a long touring ride. No need to ride back with the Low Fuel alarm flashing for many minutes.

Sometimes we would complete our ride without using the extra fuel. After loading onto the trailer at the launch ramp, we would pour the carried fuel into the main tank. Now the fuel cans are empty and easy to handle.

The mounting design is resilient and stable even when riding in rough water.
No damage to the rear deck, no strap chaffing and no permanent hardware or extra holes.

When removed the kit takes up very little space, fits into the provided case.

Included are the special extended length EZ-Pour flexible spouts. Makes it so much easier to refuel without spilling gasoline or messing about with those finicky and slow flowing fuel spouts sold with all modern gas cans. Combined with the EZ-Pour breather fitting on each handle the fuel flows quickly into the main fuel tank. Takes maybe a minute.

Maximum usable fuel tank capacity and cruise distance

Unlike the 2021 and newer GP1800R models, these 2017 GP1800 have the full capacity 70 liter fuel tank available.

The newer GP1800R have a known reduction in usable fuel capacity. Less total fuel on board when 'full'. And the Low Fuel warning occurs much earlier making it more difficult to gauge remaining range while riding.

The result is noticably less usable cruise range from the 2021 and newer GP1800R main tank despite the Yamaha posted 'capacity specs' being nominally the same.

About 20-25% less usable fuel than our 2017 GP1800.

These 2017 GP1800 have the factory fuel cap located high up, just forward of the handlebar. Reachable while astride the seat, it is entirely possible to refill the main fuel tank from the extra cans without being in shallow water or at a dock. We have refuelled in deep water several times.

It is even easier at a dock or in shallow water.

The higher up fuel filler location avoids the backflow and fuel splashing problems that happen with the much lower and farther forward filler location on 2021 and newer GP1800R.

More total fuel capacity

We often top off the fuel tank at a roadside gas station including part way up the filler neck. During the trailer ride to the launch ramp the extra fuel burps down into the main tank, maximizing fuel available for the ride.

The result is maximum fuel available in the main tank and maximized cruise range.

This topping off of the fuel tank cannot be done with the 2021 and newer GP1800.

Here is how the math works
GP1800 SVHO factory fuel tank capacity is 70 litres.
The last 18 litres is the reserve, where the Low Fuel warning will be flashing.
So the usable fuel capacity before Low Fuel warning is about 50 liters.
20 liters extra fuel on the rear deck is about 40% of the usable main tank.
40 liters in two cans is 80% more fuel and probably more than 80% extra cruise range.
60 extra liters in three cans, divided into two GP1800 fuel tanks is 30 liters more for each GP1800. Which is 60% more fuel for each
AND you would still have the bottom 20 liters of reserve fuel available in each GP1800, should you need it.
Cruise range with just the main tank is about 125Km, maybe farther depending on your speeds, wind and water conditions. This includes dipping into the reserve portion.
Cruise range with two gas cans on each rear deck would be about 200 Kilometers before the Low Fuel warning appears, perhaps 225Km of travel including some reserve fuel. These are round trip estimates.
If you stop at a marina you can refill everything and do that distance again!

I have four 20 liter fuel cans available with this kit.

Included will be the extra long flexible fuel spouts.

And the no-fuss yellow caps that properly seal.

Plus all the custom adjustable straps, stainless steel snap hooks, ratchets and custom spacers that make the whole thing work so well.

Annoyances

It does take a few minutes to rig up the cans and get them securely strapped down on the rear deck. We would normally do this before leaving home, trailering with the empty gas cans mounted on the rear deck.

Somewhere along the way we would stop and fill the fuel cans, still strapped to the rear deck. Check all the straps for tightness, then head to the launch ramp.

Riding with full fuel cans on the rear deck

With a single rider and one or two full cans we would set the trim control to full bow down position. The trim setting would compensate for the weight and the GP1800 would ride quite normally.

With three full fuel cans the ride is quite normal below about 90km/h. Above that speed there was tendancy to mildly porpoise.

Since we were doing long distance cruising we would just moderate our cruise speeds until we had burned enough fuel from the main tank to fit at least 20 liters in. Stop somewhere and transfer 20 liters into each GP1800. Now the rear deck only has the weight of a single full can.

We can have maximum fun, zooming along at whatever speed we desired.

AND we have almost full main fuel tanks!

Upsides

Explore distant areas without needing to find a marina that is open.
This can be a real problem solver when touring in shoulder seasons and weekdays when some marinas may not be open or have limited hours.

Carry the correct octane gasoline with you, no worry about refilling at a marina that only carries regular grade fuel.

Know the quality of the fuel. No worries about filling up with bad gas.

Avoid the extra costs of marina pricing for gasoline.

Even if your trip estimate says you should not need extra fuel, just having a single gas can with you reduces your stress. Especially if you end up going somewhere farther or take a side trip along the way.
